Canadians in the Mexican-American War

As previously noted on this blog, my research on British North Americans in the Mexican-American War will be appearing in the International Journal of Canadian Studies. I appreciate the opportunity to bring greater attention to cross-border migrations in the 1840s.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with genealogist Sandra Goodwin, host of the Maple Stars and Stripes Podcast, on this topic. In fact, genealogists will no doubt be interested in seeing the names of these 504 men who were born in the British colonies and who enlisted in the U.S. Army. I am happy to satisfy the curious by sharing two documents here.

The first is an Excel spreadsheet with the raw data. I have been diligent in collecting the information, but errors can occur, not least in interpreting others’ handwriting. If you happen to peruse the pages of the original documents and find discrepancies, please let me know—I will make the fix.

The second document is a cleaned-up version that may be more user-friendly, unless you plan on sorting the data in different ways or building charts.

I am happy to know that my research may be profiting others. As in all things, please cite appropriately—give credit where credit is due.
